What is a facial serum? And how should you use it?

Jul 9th 2019

Whether you’re changing up your regular skin care routine, or keeping an eye out for the latest products, you’ve probably come across facial serums and thought, what are those? And should I be using them?

To celebrate the release of our new Merlot Sunrise Serum, we’ve got your questions answered!

What are serums?

Serums are typically clear or translucent, with something of a gel-type consistency. They contain targeted nutrients or ingredients, like antioxidants, and are made of small molecules, allowing for a deep level of absorption. Most serums concentrate on addressing a specific skin concern.

How should serums be used in a regular skin care routine?

Serums can be used any time of day, but morning and night are typically preferred. Merlot Sunrise Serum is designed to be applied in the morning, after cleansing, and followed by a hydrating moisturizer (like Merlot Moisturizer). The serum provides an extra dose of hydration — it can be used all over the face, or in targeted areas that might be prone to dryness.

What’s the different between a facial serum and a facial oil?

Facial oils are meant to moisturize, and in many cases can be used in place of a traditional moisturizer, especially if you have sensitive skin — or in addition to, if you skin is very dry.

Facial serums concentrate on protecting the skin and tend to have a specific focus, such as brightening or helping reveal firmer skin.

How is Merlot Sunrise Serum different from a Vitamin C serum?

Both Vitamin C serums and Merlot Sunrise Serum employ powerful antioxidants. Vitamin C serums tend to focus strictly on fading and preventing dark spots. Merlot Sunrise Serum features concentrated resveratrol, an antioxidant that helps protect skin against environmental damage (think UV rays, smoke, and pollution). It also works to visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Additionally Merlot Sunrise Serum contains two peptides that provide similar benefits to Vitamin A or retinol, improving skin’s appearance in a format that’s gentler and can be used by all skin types. Great news for those with sensitive skin.

Aren’t serums super expensive?

Many serums can tend be on the pricier side — largely due to specialized ingredients — but there’s a variety of price points. Don’t break the bank, but rather look for a serum with the highest quality ingredients, that can deliver benefits at a reasonable price.
